Even Yet, Its Mighty Daring Sings

“If you love innovative theater, you have just got to come down here…

I can’t believe we lucked into seeing this new Theatre Company’s very first production.  They are a polished group that carried off a topic with difficult themes, and did so in a highly unorthodox manner. Who would dream of coupling a serious play on the financial crisis with burlesque and fire dancing?  They made it work.  It flowed seamlessly from flaming hula hoops to Ponzi schemes. It’s just great when a play defies categorization.  I love that. I love when you can’t just tuck something neatly into a genre.

There was singing, dancing, circusy stuff… The writing was absolutely contemporary… The financial meltdown.  It’s tentacles finding it’s way into every segment of society… The heavy themes of honesty, family, what we owe to one another as a society, were not trivialized when garishly made-up cabaret girls plopped themselves into splits, and clowns peddled the vast stage on micro-bicycles.

The lead actors are absolutely outstanding, lending gravity to all the cavorting about them.  There is not a weak member in the cast.

Now to the space itself.  It’s absolutely enormous… for us, as the audience, the industrial space is a wonder.  Unlike what we are normally conditioned to think of as “The Theatre”. There are comfy couches scattered about, encouraging friendship and community, rather than …. this is MY numbered seat…
